Family Medical Leave
Employees shall be eligible for up to twelve (12) weeks of unpaid Family Medical Leave in any twelve (12) month period for the birth or adoption of a child, to care for a spouse, child or parent with a serious medical condition, or for the worker to deal with is or her own serious medical condition as provided for in the Federal Family Medical Leave Act.  Family Leave shall be without pay except that an employee may elect to use Sick Leave or Vacation Leave as prescribed herein.  A Family Medical Leave request, including the tentative duration of the leave requested, must be submitted to the Department Head in advance of the leave.  The twelve (12) month period starts at the beginning of the leave.  Vacation Leave and/or Leave Without Pay may be used during the period before and after childbirth when no actual disability is present, or during an adoption.  Sick Leave may be taken during the period of actual disability as certified by the attending physician of the employee, and when care of a spouse, child, or parent is required from an employee.  If an employee wished to retain all accumulated Sick and Vacation Leave, Leave Without Pay may be taken for the entire period.  For more information, contact the Human Resources Department at 944-1115 or
