Vacation & Leave


Vacation leave is accrued per pay period and is based on years of service.  Probationary employees are not eligible to use vacation leave during their probationary period.  Vacation leave accrual rates are as follows:

Sick Leave: 

Sick leave is accrued at the rate of 3.70 hours per pay period or twelve (12) days per year.  Sick leave may be taken in fifteen-minute increments.  The Town accepts sick leave transfers from other N.C. local government employers.

Funeral Leave:

A regular, full-time employee may have up to twenty-four (24) hours leave at full pay granted in case of a death in the immediate family.  Immediate family is defined, in Article II, Section 4, (j), as father, mother, wife, husband, son, daughter, brother, sister, grandmother, grandfather, grandchild, and in-law, step, or half relation of this list.  Additional time may be taken with the approval of the Department Head and should be charged to Vacation Leave or Leave Without Pay.


In the event of the death of a spouse or child, as defined by N.C. General Statutes, an employee will be granted forty (40) hours leave with full pay.


Parental Leave:

Regular, full-time employees who are parents, guardians, or persons "standing in loco parentis" of a school-aged child, shall be granted eight (8) hours per year of Paid Leave to attend or otherwise be involved at their child's school.  However, Parental Leave is subject to the following conditions:

  1. The leave shall be at a mutually agreed upon time between the Supervisor and the employee;

  2. A written request must be submitted to the Supervisor for the leave at least forty-eight (48) hours before the time desired for the leave;

  3. Written verification from the child's school that the employee attended or was otherwise involved at the school during the time of the leave.

For the purposes of this section, "school" means any public school, private church school, church of religious charter, non-public school, preschool and child daycare facilities.


Civil Leave:

A Town employee called for jury duty or subpoenaed as a witness in any work-related civil or criminal legal proceeding will be entitled to Leave With Pay for such duty during the required absence.  When a Town employee attends court in connection with official duties, all time spent in court and in travel to and from home, or place of work, to court will be considered working time.


An employee may keep the stipend received from jury duty in addition to regular compensation.  The Town will compensate employees for travel, room and board, and special expenses incurred while serving as a witness in connection with their official duties.  While on Civil Leave, benefits and leave will accrue as though on regular duty.
